Freedom Looks Different Than I Imagined
When we're young, freedom often looks like escape.
Freedom is getting a driver's license.
Moving into our first apartment.
Landing that dream job.
Taking a vacation.
Buying our first home.
We spend decades chasing milestones, believing that freedom is something waiting just over the next hill.
But somewhere along the way, I've discovered something different.
Freedom isn't a destination.
It's permission.
Permission to create what speaks to your heart.
Permission to slow down.
Permission to stop measuring your life by someone else's expectations.
As an artist, I've found that the greatest freedom isn't found in having unlimited time.
It's found in finally creating work that feels completely, authentically mine.
Freedom in the Studio
One of the greatest gifts retirement has given me is the freedom to explore.
Not because I suddenly have endless hours.
But because I no longer feel the need to rush.
Ideas are allowed to breathe.
Some become jewelry.
Others become sculptural beadwork.
Some become stories hidden inside a wolf.
Others may take months—or even a year—to emerge, like B: The Beaded Rabbit, my newest long-term sculptural project.
Creative freedom isn't about making more.
It's about making what feels true.
Letting Curiosity Lead
For years my hands knew the rhythm of bead crochet.
That rhythm became familiar.
Comfortable.
Reliable.
Then life gently reminded me that even artists must adapt.
As arthritis changed what my hands could comfortably do, I discovered something unexpected.
Instead of losing creativity...
I found another doorway.
The Sculptural Beadwork Collection has become that doorway.
It has invited me to experiment with animals, ornaments, symbolic sculptures, and dimensional art in ways I never imagined years ago.
Sometimes freedom doesn't come from holding on.
Sometimes it comes from allowing ourselves to become beginners again.
Celebrating Independence
July naturally reminds us of independence.
Flags wave.
Fireworks light the sky.
Families gather together.
While we celebrate our nation's freedom, I also find myself thinking about another kind of independence.
The freedom to choose.
To learn.
To change.
To create.
To begin again.
Those freedoms are worth celebrating every day.
Jewelry That Celebrates Individuality
No two people wear jewelry exactly the same way.
That's part of its beauty.
A necklace becomes part of someone's favorite outfit.
A bracelet becomes a daily reminder.

Large projects have a wonderful way of teaching patience.

As I write this, my worktable is scattered with beads in every direction, and B—the Beaded Rabbit—is quietly waiting for the next decision. Some evenings I accomplish a great deal. Other evenings I simply sit, study the piece, and think. I've learned those quiet moments are part of the creative process too. Not every step forward involves adding another bead.
